A mother cat in Desoto, Missouri knew she had to find a safe place that was dry and warm to have her kittens. After searching she did find a refuge to get in from the weather, but it was certainly not built for a cat. Barkley and Butch were born on November 10th, in an abandoned, old wooden doghouse in a backyard.
There was a total of 6 kittens in the litter but by the time someone discovered them, 4 had passed away. Giving the mother time to return, the 2 survivors were eventually removed from the spot the mom had picked and taken inside the house to be warmed up and fed.
Barkley and Butch arrived today at the home of one of our Foster Care Volunteers and because we had two of our new volunteers being trained at the time, they got to do their first intake. They jumped into action like they had been doing it for years. The 2-day old kittens each weigh 2.9 ounces. We'd like it if they weighed a little more, but the way they latched onto the bottle and started sucking down the formula, they are going to be growing nicely. Like all kittens that we get, they were given a vitamin B-12 shot, Capstar for fleas, Kero syrup on their gums and some fluids. These supplements will give them an added boost which is necessary when they are so young and have spent time outdoors.
The woman who reached out to SNUGGLE Pet Rescue is going to keep an eye out for the mother, and in the meantime, build a better house for any cats looking for shelter. Given this mother had already chosen to go into the doghouse it should not take much convincing for her to take down the vacancy sign and move in - with or without kittens. Should she show up the other thing that will be done is the woman is going to work at trapping her.
Tonight, there will be 2 less kittens trying to stay warm which will make us sleep a little better too.
