The SNUGGLE Pet Rescue Commitment
"You don't have to be whole to be happy!"
Sharon Maag, SNUGGLE Pet Rescue Founder
The newborn kittens and puppies that SNUGGLE Pet Rescue takes care of all started their life struggling. The babies that come to us are:
-
Wondering where the milk is after they have been abandoned.
-
Having a hard time breathing because their body is trying to fight off illness.
-
Unable to move because they are injured.
These fragile babies desperately need someone to fight for them. Not to look at them and decide the challenges they face at such a young age are too great to put forth the time and money to try and save them.
SNUGGLE Pet Rescue never backs down from a challenge. Our team of volunteers, fight every day, around the clock, to give abandoned, injured and sick newborn kittens and puppies the skilled and compassionate attention they deserve. This involves the normal newborn requirements but there is so much more that is done to be able to give these babies a chance to become a healthy and happy cat or dog. During the critical hours, days and weeks, the kittens and puppies are treated by a veterinarian who has experience with newborns and their unique needs. The cost to treat the babies that are in the worse shape can be quite costly but SNUGGLE Pet Rescue never lets money stop us.
If SNUGGLE Pet Rescue was not willing to make a commitment to the most vulnerable, the majority of the kittens and puppies we have saved would have died alone or been euthanized. Sadly, not all the newborns survive, in spite of our efforts. One reason is that we get the neonates, the babies whose eyes are closed, and the umbilical cord is still attached, when they have been exposed to cold and hot temperatures for too long. Babies who have been without milk for too long have a slim chance of surviving. Those whose illness is too severe do not have the strength to fight. Each time we lose one of the babies it is difficult, but at least they did not die alone and get dumped in a garbage can. SNUGGLE Pet Rescue treats those who lost their fight with utmost respect from the first moment we touch them until they take their last breath.

What the Statistics Don't Tell You

There used to be a predictable kitten and puppy season but that has changed. SNUGGLE Pet Rescue is seeing more newborns throughout the year. When babies are born during really cold and hot months, their chances of surviving decreases if they are not somewhere they can be protected and cared for by their mother. Another thing that has changed is that during COVID spay and neuter efforts stopped, which means there are more kittens and puppies being born. Organizations who work to control the overpopulation challenge are now having a hard time catching up.
For all the abandoned, injured and sick newborns there are usually only two choices. SNUGGLE Pet Rescue or a 0% chance of surviving. To have saved 140 newborn kittens and puppies in 2024 is an achievement made in spite of the odds being stacked against these fragile babies. Our team of Foster Care volunteers did everything possible to save the most critical ones, but it just was not enough. When you are caring for animals that have so much to overcome, losing some of them is inevitable. With each life lost, the SNUGGLE Pet Rescue Team learns something that can be used to help kittens and puppies in the future. For the 140 survivors, we celebrate their strength, and it is our sincere hope they continue to thrive.
