SNUGGLE PET RESCUE IS ALWAYS READY TO HELP

Rescuing orphaned and special needs kittens and puppies who require foster care due to illness or injuries.

What To Do If You Find a Newborn Kitten or Puppy

If you have a newborn kitten or puppy experiencing a life threatening emergency take the animal to a veterinarian immediately. If it is after hours call SNUGGLE Pet Rescue at 636.229.2796.

PLEASE NOTE!  SNUGGLE PET RESCUE DOES NOT HAVE A SHELTER.  ALL OF OUR ANIMALS ARE IN FOSTER HOMES.

If the baby(s) is not in immediate danger, take the time to determine the following:

1. Are they quiet, sleeping, clean and warm?  If any of these apply, this means the mother is still taking care of them.  Cats do move their babies, one at a time, every 7 to 10 days to avoid predators, so the mother may be in the process of doing this.

WHAT TO DO - Leave the baby(s) where they are and observe them from a distance to see if the mother returns.  One trick is to put flour on the ground to see if you see cat paw prints.  Depending on the weather, if after 30 to 45 minutes, the mother does not return, remove the baby(s) and follow the steps below.

2. Are they constantly crying, dirty or is their body cold?  If any of these apply, this may mean the mother has been gone for an extended period and is unable to return to her babies.

WHAT TO DO - Remove the baby(s) and follow the steps below.

Remember to remain calm and use common sense.

PLEASE NOTE!  These are guidelines.  The information is intended to stabilize the animal until you can get it help.  Situations can be different and for this reason the response to a kitten or puppy in need of help can vary.

Guidelines for Helping a Kitten or Puppy You Have Found

Abandoned Kitten/Puppy

Read information above to determine if the baby has been abandoned. The mother may be in the process of moving her babies and the one(s) you found has not been moved yet.

If there is no mother get an animal carrier or box with a lid ready.  Put a cloth inside that the baby's nails will not catch on - baby blanket, shirt, etc. Put the baby on the cloth. Pull up one corner and cover the baby making sure it can get air.

Carefully pick up baby and put in carrier or box on top of blanket.  Pull up one corner of the blanket and cover the kitten making sure it can get air to breathe.  DO NOT feed the baby, especially any type of milk. Do not try to give them water.

Call SNUGGLE Pet Rescue at 636.229.2796.  If you cannot reach us, call or go to the nearest veterinary hospital.  When transporting the baby make sure it is not where it will get too hot or too cold.

If you cannot afford to take the baby to a veterinarian and you have not spoken to Snuggle Pet Rescue yet, you can call your local animal shelter, but most are not equipped to care for very young kittens and puppies.

Want to Take Care of a Newborn Kitten or Puppy Yourself

Taking care of an abandoned newborn kitten or puppy is a lot of work.  They require care 24/7, which includes being bottle fed every two hours.  If you have never done it before, it will not take you long to realize it is not easy and you will lose a lot of sleep.  SNUGGLE Pet Rescue suggests that you let us take care of the abandoned baby you found.  Then if fostering is something you think you would be interested in doing on a regular basis, sign up to be a foster for SNUGGLE Pet Rescue.  If you are accepted into the program, training will be provided before you start taking care of a kitten or puppy on your own.  For more information go to our Foster Care Program page.

If you are just getting started caring for newborn
kittens and puppies, be sure to go to the
Resources page for lots of helpful information.

We Do Not Have a Shelter
All the kittens and puppies SNUGGLE Pet Rescue receives are placed in Foster Homes with our trained Volunteers.  We then network
with thoroughly screened local animal
