She Won't Be Winning a Mother of the Year Award

Not all cats make good mothers, and we learned of one today that proves this. The mother and her one kitten were at Animal Control in Jefferson County. It seems the Siamese cat lost her patience with her 5-day-old baby who was having problems latching on when it was time to eat again. She reacted by grabbing the kitten's head in her mouth and then she bit down hard.

Covered in blood the kitten was rushed to a local veterinarian. The deep wounds on the kitten's head and chin required a total of 8 stitches. Obviously, returning the kitten to its mother was not an option, so that is when SNUGGLE Pet Rescue got the call to see if we could take the injured baby.

Right after we got the kitten, we took him to our vet. We were surprised the fur around the wounds had not been shaved prior to getting his stitches. We just wanted to be sure there wasn't anything else that should be done. The vet agreed that the kitten's head and chin should have been shaved first, but at that point he did not want to put the injured kitten through any more trauma. Our Foster Care Volunteer was sent home with Clavamox, with instructions to give .04 cc, 2 times a day. He also left with a name. One of the employees thought he looked like an Ash.

We will be keeping a close eye on the little guy to make sure no infections develop. Thankfully, he is sucking down the formula with no problems, so we're not sure why he was having problems nursing on mom. We're just grateful he's with us and let's hope the mother gets spayed because it seems being a mother is not her calling in life.
