This 7-day old kitten was named by the little girl who came with her mother to drop him off. Since today is her birthday, she got naming rights. So, meet Fluffy.
It was a week ago that a mother cat decided to give birth to 5 kittens on the family's deck. She kept them there for a short time but then started relocating them, one-by-one. Then much to the family's surprise, one was returned. They waited to see if mom would come back but when she didn't, they brought the kitten inside and started to bottle feed him. Since the mom is allergic to cats this was just a temporary solution which is why we were contacted.
Thankfully, Fluffy seems good and healthy, apart from being slightly underweight which can be remedied in short order though. He's now settled in and rooming with two of our other fosters, Orzo and Songbird.
Fluffy, and all the other kittens we have received recently, remind us of the importance of spaying and neutering. It is so unfair to the babies that are born who don't live for all kinds of reasons and for the ones who never find a home and end up living their life as strays.
We're sharing the link to the Missouri Coalition of Animal Organization's Spay and Neuter Assistance Resources page. PLEASE share this link so more people know there are low cost or free options to get companion animals sterilized! It takes all of us spreading the word if there is going to ever be hope of drastically bringing down the overpopulation numbers.
UPDATE: (6.30.25 - 1:30 pm) Yesterday Fluffy started to reject the bottle, after being a good eater since she arrived on June 21. Her Foster Care provider switched to tube feeding her. She fought it but at least she got some food in her stomach. Other supportive care was given in hopes of getting Fluffy to start showing signs of improvement. Things did not get better overnight though and this morning it was obvious she was starting to fade. As this is being written Fluffy is at the vet. The decision to have her put sleep is difficult but it is the kind thing to do at this point. When these babies start life with the cards stacked again…
